Director Alex Newton approached me right after the shoot wrapped up, sharing that they had captured a beach dance performance, lit solely by natural sunlight. Having previously collaborated with Alex, I was thrilled to be part of this project. Their vision for the music video was to create a captivating and otherworldly ambiance, with a focus on enhancing the dramatic cloud cover that emerged during filming.
To bring Alex's vision to life, I initially developed three distinct looks, each exploring a different stylistic direction. After careful consideration, Alex settled on a specific look during the final grading session, and I got to work implementing it throughout the entire music video.
To achieve the desired otherworldly effect, I made extensive use of the RGB mixer, a versatile tool that allowed me to manipulate each color channel without compromising the integrity of the footage. This approach gave us the freedom to push creative boundaries and bring out the intended look, without relying solely on traditional color wheels.
In order to accentuate the dramatic stormy sky captured on set, I crafted four luma keys to isolate specific areas of the sky. Thanks to shooting with Canon RAW, we had greater control over this aspect, and I took great care to ensure that the keys were applied with subtlety, avoiding any unwanted artifacts or noise. As a final touch, we added a gentle film grain to enhance the overall texture of the visuals.
Both Alex and the Director of Photography, Bobby were highly satisfied with the final look. After signing off the final look, I dedicated the remaining time to meticulously matching shots across the entire video, conducting a final review to ensure a cohesive visual experience.
